Who won the genetic lotto?

A powerful TEDTalk by a model. She says she won a genetic lottery and speaks of her insecurities.  She reminds us that her images in magazines are created by a team of professionals. And yet, I look around and see her image everywhere in the place I live.

What chance at confidence do girls in this part of the world have if we continue to bombard them with “professionally done up” images of women? I get that consumerism boosts the economy and that commerce is good. With millions of products on the market, can we be more selective in what we push and how we push it?

Let’s set standards for the marketing and PR industry.  Let’s monitor billboards, ads, commercials to ensure they, at the very least, do no harm.  Let’s consult with psychologists and sociologists of our culture and assess the impact advertising images have on our youth. Let’s reflect while we consume.
